Sounds like Snodgrass and the $25 thousand dollar winner work as "shills" for Poetry.com. Snodgrass, an emissary of Poetry.com, pays his good bud 25K to spread the word and promote Poetry.com.

"Go on message boards, plant yourself wherever conference attendees might be hanging--what the heck, sit in on a few conferences every now and then..." (hypothetically, of course).

Evidently, it works. (except for the part about winning a prize).

This is something that many people never understand, the fact that you may not make any money at all for many, many months.

Tee-hee! The "spam filter" part is great!

It is hard to write a bad poem. Perhaps your bloggers would like to each contribute a line for a "nonsense" poem that you would submit (under a bogus name, of course, with a junk email addy courtesy of gmail) and see what happens.

Snodgrass is...82 years old. I wonder...if...he needs the money himself???? Kind of sad...

FYI, lots of great poems from nurses over on Rattle blog + nurse's essay...a bit too discombobulated to comment so far (serious case of Palin derangement, what can I say).

Outrage, poetry.com - what's the point? Meaning, if you want to put 'em out of business - you need a lawsuit (class action from the sounds of it?) - and you need a group of plaintiffs. Or an attorney general who is interested in the case. Maybe anyone who would be a plaintiff is simply too embarrassed to step forward??? It's the humiliation factor? There is a core of outrage...and a hard outer shell of humiliation that has to be broken through. I sometimes joke with a friend, "guilt is the glue that holds the universe together" - you know, you forget to send a birthday card, something like that - but I think you could argue that humiliation is a kind of glue that holds the universe together, too. Or maybe - capitalism?

Humiliation is the glue that holds capitalism together.

On that note :)

That's actually pretty good, Trisha! I think they may have taken it on genuine artistic merit -- there's even a nice metaphor...and the sarcasm is well done.

What you really need to do is send them something like:

Blah blah blah,
You judges are lame.
My spam filter is better
At the editing game.
Blah blah blah,
oaiehj flodkfad oijdlk
Blah blah blah.
Ha ha ha...ha! =P

Of course they'd publish that, too. I really like the Wergle Flomp thing -- writing a horrible poem is harder than you'd think!
